What is ACT-SO?

It is a life changing youth enrichment program. ACT-SO is an acronym that stands for Afro- Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics. It is a student enrichment program that culminates in a local and national competition where High School students compete for scholarship awards, and prizes totaling over $300,000. It seeks to promote the following among high school students:

  • Positive self-esteem
  • Positive interaction between our youth and the adult professional community
  • Positive academic and artistic excellence
  • High academic and cultural achievement

Competition Categories

Students may select up to 3 categories to compete in:

Business

  • Entrepreneurship and Hospitality Management.

Humanities

  • Music Composition, Original Essay, Playwriting, Poetry (Written), Short Story, and Oratory.

Performing Arts

  • Dance, Dramatics, Music Composition, Vocal Classical, Vocal Contemporary, Instrumental Classical, and Instrumental Contemporary.

STEM

  • Architecture, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, and Environmental Sustainability.

Visual Arts

  • Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Filmmaking, and Drawing.

Culinary Arts

  • Culinary Arts.

WHY JOIN ACT-SO

ACT-SO pushes you to reach your maximum potential.

At ACT-SO meetings and workshops, we will teach you how to successfully compete against your counterparts by inspiring you to do your absolute best, teaching you the importance of preparation and presentation. This program culminates in local and national competitions. Students who participate in ACT-SO can compete with other students in 3 of 33 categories including Business, Humanities, STEM, Performing, Visual, and Culinary Arts.

Explore your passions

Each year, high school students across the country start a journey to sharpen their skills through the Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO). From visual arts and business to performing and culinary arts, participants work with community-based volunteers for a year to develop projects and performances. The experience culminates in local and national events where students compete for scholarships and other rewards.
